Buyer’s guide in 30 seconds
Capacity (Wh) tells you how much energy is stored. Output (W) tells you which appliances can run at once. Check both, plus startup surges, weight, battery chemistry and charging options.

Choosing the right backup
Start with the appliances you cannot do without. Their labels or manuals usually show running watts. Add the loads you expect to use together, then check the power station’s continuous and surge output.
For runtime, multiply each appliance’s watts by the hours you need it. This gives watt-hours. Allow for conversion losses and a safety margin rather than draining a battery to empty. Our calculator helps with the estimate.
LiFePO4 batteries are popular for their long cycle life. Solar charging can extend time off-grid, but UK weather makes a mains or vehicle charging option useful too. If you need to connect equipment to fixed home wiring, speak to a qualified electrician.
Capacity or output: which matters more?
Both. Output determines what can run; capacity determines for how long.
Can I use a power station indoors?
Battery power stations do not produce engine exhaust. Follow the manufacturer’s ventilation, moisture and temperature instructions. Fuel generators must remain outdoors.
